On March 21st, we will be celebrating World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD). This day, which became officially observed by the United Nations in 2012, seeks to spread global awareness to this genetic disorder.
World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated through varying activities and events, that all share common goals: to make people aware of what Down Syndrome is, what it is like to live with the disorder, and the important role that these special individuals play in each of our lives.
To help every participant meet these goals, Down Syndrome International (DSi) has put together a special website that serves as a “virtual hub.” Every participant can converse here with others around the world, sharing their experiences and promoting any WDSD events. In addition, they have an opportunity to join in on any of DSi’s activities, such as the Lots of Socks campaign.
The Lots of Socks campaign is one of DSi’s initiatives to drive awareness of Down Syndrome and garner outside support. On this day, everyone is invited to wear brightly colored socks, printed socks, and/or the Official WDSD socks. Try even wearing 3 socks at a time to represent the 3 chromosomes! The goal is to grab the attention of others and get them asking about your socks. This way, you can explain to them what World Down Syndrome Day is, and why it is important to make people aware of this disorder.
At NAPA Center, we are an avid participant of The Lots of Socks initiative, because we strongly believe in the importance of WDSD and expanding the entire world’s knowledge of the disorder. To get as many people involved as possible, we are excited to host our #LotsofSocks Instagram Contest.
Here’s how it works:
Step 1: Take a picture of you and your family wearing your funky socks together
Step 2: Post the picture on your Instagram with #LotsofSocks included in the caption and tag us @napacenter
On March 25th, we will be giving away $1,000 worth of therapy to our three lucky winners:
1st place: most likes – $500 therapy credit at NAPA
2nd place: most creative picture location – $250 therapy credit at NAPA
3rd place: best socks – $250 therapy credit at NAPA
We look forward to seeing all of the unique pictures for this amazing cause!
At NAPA Center, we take an individualized approach to therapy because we understand that each child is unique with very specific needs. We embrace differences with an understanding that individualized programs work better. For this reason, no two therapeutic programs are alike. If your child needs our services, we will work closely with you to select the best therapies for them, creating a customized program specific to your child’s needs and your family’s goals.
